KENTASTE x FINCA

A Sustainable Partnership

In Kenya's coastal region, coconut trees stretch from Tanzania to Somalia, growing in abundance across thousands of smallholder farms. Despite the potential to turn coconut farming into a lucrative industry, most farmers face obstacles that hinder the transformation of their crops into profitable products. The result is an underdeveloped coconut industry, where farmers struggle to maximize the value of their harvests, relying on selling raw coconuts at local markets or to small-scale processors.

Kentaste, a social enterprise operating along the Kenyan coastline, is changing this dynamic by offering farmers access to new markets, fair prices, and valuable education. Commissioned by FINCA International, I was asked to document the impact of Kentaste on the lives of rural farmers.

The coconut industry in Kenya is severely underdeveloped, with most farmers unable to access markets or processing infrastructure that would allow them to increase the value of their crops. Selling raw coconuts at local markets means lower prices, unreliable income, and limited opportunities for farmers. Additionally, challenges such as climate change, lack of education on best farming practices, and a lack of long-term investment hinder the growth of the sector.

My approach to documenting this project was deeply immersive. I spent time with the farmers listening to their experiences, and understanding the daily struggles they face. I made a point of not only documenting the farmers at work but also spending time with their families to capture the broader context of their lives. Through this immersive approach, I was able to build strong, personal connections that informed the authenticity of the content created.

Throughout my time with Kentaste, I documented the process of training farmers on sustainable practices. From teaching them about organic farming techniques to advising them on how to better protect their crops from climate-related challenges, Kentaste has become a trusted partner in building farmers' resilience. Through film and photography, I aimed to capture moments of learning, showing farmers actively engaging in training sessions and putting their newfound knowledge into practice.

The emphasis on education—both on farming practices and business skills—became a central theme in my work. Kentaste is not just an organization providing a marketplace for coconuts; it is empowering farmers to become entrepreneurs who can make informed decisions that benefit their families and communities.

As I captured stories from the field it became clear that Kentaste’s impact is not just in the products they produce, but in the lasting relationships they build with farmers. These relationships are built on trust, education, and a shared commitment to growth. In turn, the farmers gain not only a reliable income but also the tools to create a better future for themselves, their families, and the environment.

I collaborate with social impact initiatives of all sizes. Reach out to explore opportunities.
